
(CINCINNATI, OHIO) - Eleven
national champions were crowned on Friday night at the 2010
Under-19 National Championships in Cincinnati, Ohio. Ten men's
final round bouts and one female championship contest took place
on the final day of competition at the Hyatt Regency
Cincinnati.
One of those champions
was our own Ryan Martin of Chattanooga’s West Side
Boxing Club. Ryan won his first Under-19 title with a
victory over Antonio Capulin (Houston, Texas) in the
lightweight championship bout. Martin got off to a quick start
in the bout and never looked back. He held Capulin scoreless in
the first round and enjoyed a 9-1 lead as the final round began
before moving out to a 14-4 final decision victory.
Ryan won in the 132
lb.class title by defeating Arthur Porter from Monroe, Michigan
10-7 in the prelims, he then went on to defeat Ace'Son Lesuer
from Corpus Christi, TX 8-4 in the semi
finals before closing out in grand fashion in the championship
bout.
Ryan’s coach Andy Smith was
also selected to represent the nation as one of the national
coaches. Both Ryan and Coach Smith will traveling to Baku,
Azerbaijani in April as members of the national team.
The team of champions will represent the United States at the World
Championships. Prior to their departure to Baku, the team and
coaches will spend 5 days in a team training camp at the Olympic
Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. “I am honored to not
only have an athlete representing our country, but to also have
the opportunity to serve as a coach, this is a huge win for the
